Howard Odom, M.D.

photograph of Dr. Howard Odom Dr. Odom is a Georgia native who received a B.S. in Physics at West Georgia College in Carrollton.  Shortly after receiving his degree, he joined the Allied Health Professions section of the Emory University Anesthesiology department working with Dr. Wesley Frazier.

Experience as an undergraduate teaching & lab assistant was excellent preparation for his role in the Anesthesiologist Assistant education program as an instructor of basic sciences.  He was a non-tenure track faculty member for six years and maintained a regular teaching schedule during the first two years of medical school.

He applied skills gained from his college experience as a draftsman, machinist, and weldor during work with Emory anesthesiologists and the Emory Hospital Biomedical Engineering department.   As a result, he helped to design and build the first integrated monitoring & anesthesia machine consoles used in the operating rooms at Emory Hospital.

His interest in a medical career developed during eight years of work in the Emory Anesthesiology department.  He observed and was involved in the care of surgical patients as the programmer and operator of computerized monitoring during major spine surgery at Emory Hospital.

Professional Background

Dr. Odom entered medical school at Emory in 1986.  Following graduation in 1990, he completed an internship in General Surgery at Emory.  The remainder of his anesthesia training was in Boston at Brigham & Women's Hospital.

Dr. Odom returned to Atlanta to join the faculty of Emory Medical School as an Assistant Professor at Emory University Hospital.  There he trained anesthesiology residents and expanded his previous teaching involvement in the Anesthesiologist Assistant education program.

Administrative and committee duties included serving as Medical Director of the Same-Day Surgery Center of Emory Hospital and membership on the Safety & Health committees of Emory Hospital and Emory Clinic.

Dr. Odom left Emory in 1999 to found North Point Anesthesia Consultants, LLC.  Translating his experience in academic hospital state-of-the-art anesthesia care to the world of office surgery is one of Dr. Odom's particular professional interests.
